WORKING TOGETHER TO COMBAT FLYTIPPING

Fly tipping is a blight on the lovely landscape of Hertfordshire so working with our partners, we’ve been campaigning to make making sure everyone is aware of their responsibilities when disposing of waste.

Led by the Hertfordshire Fly tipping Group, we’re encouraging everyone to be vigilant and inform their local council of any fly-tipping in their area, or to report any suspicion of fly-tipping activity.

Reporting fly tipping

You can report fly tipping to East Herts Council at www.eastherts.gov.uk/flytipping, email enquiries@eastherts.gov.uk or phone 01279 655261 (Mon-Fri, 9-5pm)

In your report please include as many details as possible, including location and type of rubbish that has been dumped and details of vehicle/people seen in the area if possible.

  • Please don’t touch or move the fly tip. Leave any evidence in place for council officers to investigate.
  • If a fly tip is blocking part or all of a road, please report it to Hertfordshire County Council.
  • East Herts Council won’t remove fly tips on private land but will investigate for evidence and lead on any prosecutions.
  • If you witness fly tipping actually taking place call the Police on 999.

Preventing fly tipping

Everyone has a legal 'duty of care' to ensure your household or business waste is disposed of correctly.

You can be prosecuted even if your waste is fly tipped by someone else on your behalf.

If it's YOUR waste, it's YOUR responsibility. Always use a registered waste carrier to collect your rubbish.

Let's S.C.R.A.P fly tipping

Suspect all waste carriers. Don't let them take your rubbish until they provide proof of registration. Note their vehicle's registration plate.

Check that a waste carrier is registered with the Environment Agency.

Refuse any unexpected offers to have your rubbish taken away.

Ask how your rubbish will be disposed of - seek evidence of this.

Paperwork must be obtained: a proper invoice, waste transfer note or receipt, including a description of the waste being removed and the waste carrier's contact details.
